Future projects

Commuter trains and metro constitute the base of the public transport system in the metropolitan region. City of Helsinki has defined a policy in its strategy that public transport, especially rail transport, is emphasized in the traffic planning of the metropolitan area. The target is to extend the rail transport system of the region.

In the commuter traffic extension means, besides the Ring line, also e.g. Drop line that is an underground commuter train track planned for the downtown of Helsinki. The track would reduce congestion at the main station by directing trains from Pasila to a drop-shaped track loop that would enable a possibility to a direct change to metro in Hakaniemi and possibly also in Töölö.

Drop Line (Pisara):

  • Double track, trains in parallel tunnels in rock
  • Will be built under the metro tracks
  • New stations: south/Helsinki C, east/Hakaniemi, west/Töölö
  • General planning and environmental impact assessment have started

There is no decision yet on the Drop Line project. If a positive decision on building the track will be taken, realization of the Drop Line will be scheduled to the 2020'ies at the earliest. Preliminary cost estimate of the track is 400 – 600 million euro.
