Commuter train transport in the metropolitan area
The commuter trains in the metropolitan area are in operation on the main line between Helsinki and Riihimäki, on the coastal line between Helsinki and Karjaa, on the Vantaankoski line between Helsinki-Vantaankoski as well as on the direct line between Helsinki and Lahti.

The new Sm5 trains will be put into commuter service gradually once they have been finalised. The first train arrived in Finland in November 2008 and the second one in January 2009. By the end of the year 2011 ten new commuter trains will be supplied to Finland and all 32 trains will be in passenger service by February 2014. HSL will lease the trains for the commuter operation in the Helsinki region.
The existing Sm5 trains are in operation mainly between Helsinki and Leppävaara and Helsinki and Vantaankoski. Operation on the Ring line that will be finalised in the year 2014 will be arranged by using Sm5 trains.
