Junakalusto Oy will deliver 32 new commuter trains i.e. Sm5 trains for the commuter traffic in the metropolitan area in the coming years. New commuter trains are needed because traffic increases and the existing rolling stock are ageing. The first new commuter trains are already in operation and once the Ring line is ready, traffic on that track will be started by using only Sm5 trains. With the Ring line a new train connection will be created between the centre of Helsinki and Helsinki–Vantaa airport.
Sm5 commuter trains will be delivered by a Swiss company Stadler Bussnang AG. The brand name given by Stadler to these EMU's is Flirt; that stands for the words Fast Light Innovative Regional Train.
